The Story of SquidInk
Early on I learned that the key to many of my transformations and creations was paint. And, the kind of paint that really made things jump was chalked paint. What is chalked paint? It is known for its matte finish — hence the name, after chalk. I like to say chalked, because chalk makes some folks think that the paint is blackboard paint. It can really transform furniture and add a really boost to home decor. The deep colors and impart a rustic, vintage and chic vibe. The other thing is that chalked paint can be sanded and waxed, offering a distressed look with vintage charm.
The issue was that name brand chalked paint was really expensive — and for me to apply my craft and renew a piece - I have to be able to sell them. Chalked paint ends up being more expensive than latex — but it uses less paint because it is thicker and covers better. With pricy chalked paint, all the profits would stay in the can.
One day, while exploring the booths of the Brimfield Antique Flea Markets, I met a nice lady who had a secret receipt for homemade chalk paint. I took it back to my workshop, tried it, perfected it and made a big decision. Squid Ink was born.
My paint was bespoke and really great — it allowed my to make my own colors and express myself. I started by finding inspiration in the Granite State, and taking the places I loved around New Hampshire and boiling them all down to capture their special feel. My cloudy white took its tone from Mount Washington, my blue came form the pure waters of Lake Winnipesaukee, and my yellow from the state beach at Wallis Sands.
My paint come in two sizes, and can really transform an accent piece or a furniture into a special thing. So check it out our store, and look how a small investment in my paint can add color and panache to your life!
